Knitting fun

Yesterday was World Wide Knit in Public Day......yes, there is such a thing.

World Wide Knit in Public Day
People joined in from all over the world. The official website records that 33 countries signed up and there were 440 KIPs.  I particularly liked these pics I found, but there are many, many more of happy knitters out in the sunshine, enjoying their craft and each others company.

Here in Murwillumbah we didn't get out into the sunshine, as it was drizzly and cold. Luckily we have a great art space in town, the M-Arts Precinct, where our hostess was Nikki from Mill and Make, a cute little yarn shop housed in a shipping container.  Actually, all the galleries and shops in M-Arts are in shipping containers and look amazing.

Nikki's gallery and shop.....on a quiet day
We had around 60 people turn out for the afternoon, I had no idea there were so many knitters in town!  Unfortunately, all the photos I took turned out blurry, so nothing to show of everyone having a great time.

I was working on a beret to take with me next week when I head south  for a few days.  It'll be much colder there than here, and while I hate wearing beanies, I will need something to keep my head warm, so a beret, being a little more loose-fitting, it is.

This is an 8ply alpaca in denim blue. It's soft and easy to knit, but as it has a little fuzz, it does make me sneeze a bit. I hope it doesn't bother me when it's on my head! I sat in the sun and knitted today, so I have quite a bit more done, and am up to the decreases to shape the top, so I'll be easily finished before I go away.

So till next time when I should have a finished beret to show

  1. I think berets are way more stylish than beanies. 😊

    1. I agree Nil, I look like a bag lady in a beanie! I'm not sure I'll even wear it, but better to have it just in case.........

  2. My deportment has suffered greatly since not wearing a uniform and well, since my middle regions have expanded too! But sitting that straight backed like the young man with the huge needles would end my days way sooner am sure! Good on you all for being out and knitting, its a delightful thing to see anyone doing it in public and why on earth not! I always take my EPP with me when Im taking the grandchildren to playcentres. Very rarely does anyone get the courage to speak and ask me what Im makingbut one child did once and I showed her how to make a hexi or two and gave her afew to go away with. Like the blue for the beret very much, take a peg for your nose, you know, just in case lol

    1. I wasn't sure where you were going with the expanded nether regions comment Lyn, but yes, I see what you mean. He does look very upright and quite relaxed sitting like that. Ah, youth! I take my knitting to lots of places, but had a friend move seats when I pulled my knitting out a local choir performance, too embarrassed to be seen with me....but a lot of women came to talk to me, and the choir's next performance, there were lots of us knitting. Subversive!

  3. Lovely! Both the beret, which is a gorgeous colour and must be beautifully soft, and the idea of flashing needles around the world! I cannot imagine why anyone would be embarrassed sitting with a knitter; what's the problem of doing something useful with your hands while other parts of you are otherwise engaged? Sure it's more impressive than anything else, as an example of top-grade multi-tasking in action ;-)

    1. Thanks, the beret is coming along nicely and will be a nice addition to my wardrobe. We had a good time knitting in public, such a great idea. Oh you know, some people just have their set ideas.....I didn't mind that she moved, more elbow room for flashing those needles 😊

  4. I look forward to seeing your beret - how stylish! I do have a knitted beanie but only wear it for dog walking when I very rarely see anybody anyway but, if I do, I certainly wouldn't care as much as I once would have. Age has few advantages but that's one of them.

  5. It's nearly finished, a few rows tonight might see it off the needles! I'm not ready to give up my vanity just yet, and wear a beanie, I'll have to age a bit more I think 😆

  6. Nanette, Saturday was a wet day here too. We had our simple living workshop and I forgot about the knitting day but, as usual, our Margaret who you met here was knitting yet another pair of beautiful socks.
